When Should You Get Worried About Hair Loss?

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, in women is caused by many things that include stress, hormonal changes, medication and even using harsh styling tools. It is a very unpleasant situation, especially considering that hair loss is seen as normal in men, but nos so for hair loss in women. Also, having thick and healthy hair is usually an indication of being beautiful and healthy.

Generally, losing a few hairs every day is normal. What is considered the normal amount is 50 to 100 hairs per day, after which new hair grows to replace the lost hair. However, there are several factors that may cause this amount to increase such as over brushing your hair or applying too much heat when styling it every day.
You are most likely to see how much hair you have lost when washing your hair as it comes out when you are rinsing. If you wash your hair once every few days, the amount of hair that naturally becomes loose and falls out would have accumulated and so, it may seem as if you are losing more hair than you actually are.
But, when should you really become concerned about extreme hair loss?

You will be able to notice if you are experiencing abnormal hair loss when you see more hair than usual on your brush or while you are washing your hair. You will need to assess what may be causing the hair loss in order to see if you should be concerned and what you can do to try and fix the problem.

Ask yourself the following questions:

1. What changes are you going through in your life?
A crash diet or being under a lot of stress can cause increased hair loss. This is because your body and your hair will not be receiving enough nutrients to thrive. If that is the case, you will need to change your eating habits to include nutrients that are good for your hair such as iron and calcium, or find a healthy way of dealing with the stress in your life such as meditation or exercise.
2. Have You Recently Had a Baby?
Pregnancy and post-natal hormonal changes can cause hair loss and hair thinning in women. This is because, while you are pregnant, oestrogen levels are quite high and so, hair is abundant and full. The hair will not be falling out at the normal 50 to 100 hairs per day. About three months after giving birth, you may see an increase in hair loss. This is caused by a drop in oestrogen levels and so, an increase in hair loss. The good news is that it is only a temporary condition.
3. Have You Started New Medication?
Medication can be a major cause of hair loss. Drugs that are prescribed for cholesterol control and hypertension are some of the most common cause of sudden extreme hair loss. Obviously, the side effects of drugs differ from one person to the next. However, if increased hair loss coincides with the time you started taking a new course of medication, then that may be the cause.
4. Have You Recently Permed, Relaxed or Coloured your Hair?
Sometime your hair may react negatively to chemical hair processing and colouring. This may be because it was not done properly, or that your hair is particularly sensitive to the chemicals.

By eliminating the above potential causes of hair loss, you will have an idea of whether or not you should be concerned about the amount of increased hair loss you are experiencing. Fortunately, about 98% of hair loss in women cases can be treated. By visiting a specialist, you can find the best solution to your specific hair loss problems.
