Everyone approaches skincare differently. Some women cleanse and moisturize once a day, while other women have endless creams, serums and gels which they apply morning and night. Each think they are right of course, and each method works for different skin types. Skin care companies are obviously more inclined to recommend the use of multiple products, but is this all just a sneaky corporate plan to get us to buy more of their products?
The Day Cream.
–During the day your skin has to deal with air pollution, makeup, damaging UV rays, and many other environmental factors. So, creams made for day use usually focus on protection and support for your skin.
–Day creams contain SPF protection to prevent your skin from burning and photo-ageing; antioxidants to fight free radicals; and ingredients such as caffeine to give the skin an energized feel and look.
-These creams are made to be worn under cosmetics so they are generally light and easily absorbed by your skin- providing an oil-free surface to apply foundation.
-Although some day creams may say that they contain anti-ageing properties, they are usually light in compounds such as alpha-hydroxy acids and retinoids, because these make the skin more sensitive to the sun.
The Night Cream.
–Like the rest of your body, your skin does the majority of its repairing, restoring and regenerating at night
-Night creams are focused on moisture and recovery, and the powerful moisturizing components penetrate the skin over the course of several hours while you sleep.
–They also have the highest concentration of anti-ageing properties- such as retinol, glycolic acid and hyaluronic acid. This is why night creams are richer and heavier than day creams, which is OK when you’re sleeping- unless you wear makeup to bed??!
Should I use both? Or just one moisturizer?
The decision to use both day and night creams is completely up to you. Everyone’s skin is slightly different, and you have to decide what works for you. A day and night regimen may be better suited to someone with particularly dry skin. Just as long as you make sure that you have sun protection for the day… we’ll let you make the decision!
