We all go through ups and downs at certain times especially as a woman as we have those dreaded hormones. Besides the usual PMS hormonal imbalances we all suffer from stress due to work, family, motherhood, finances etc. Some people manage their stress, while others deal with in in an unhealthy way by drugs, alcohol, lash out at others or turn to food amongst other things.
I’m not immune to any of it but stress can be managed effectively. In order to manage your stress, it starts with identifying what is causing it. If the methods you’re currently using are not contributing to a healthy, happy you then you need to change it.
Dealing with stressful situations: the 4 A’s:
Change the situation by: |
Change your reaction by: |
1.Avoid the stressor |
1. Adapt to the stressor |
2.Alter the stressor |
2. Accept the stressor |
Stress management strategy 1: Avoid unnecessary stress
Rule no 1: Learn to say NO – We all hate to but if you can’t take on more than you can handle then you are headed for disaster.
Rule no 2: Avoid people who stress you out – If someone is consistently a source of stress in your life, limit their access.
Rule no 3: Avoid topics that stress you out – If politics incites furious ire in you then don’t read the politics section of the newspaper.
Rule no 4: Lessen your “to do” list – Plan your workload accordingly and analyse what you can realistically complete in the time you’ve allocated.
Stress management strategy 2: Alter the situation
Rule no 1: Express your feelings instead of bottling them up – Tell your boyfriend his slob-like habits are seriously causing major resentment and he needs to clean up his act!
Rule no 2: Learn how to compromise – If you want someone to change their behavior, you should be willing to do the same.
Rule no 3: Manage your time better – Poor time management causes a lot of stress so plan ahead.
Golden Rule: Make time for yourself and do something you love – Read a book or magazine, paint your nails, watch reruns of your favorite show, get a massage, go for a walk on the beach with your dogs. We all need and deserve downtime.
