Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer in Light

This is the most lightweight and silkiest primer that I have ever used!

I am reminded of baby skin whenever I use it. It creates an amazing canvas for foundation.

I do use it in conjunction with the Camera Ready BB and the Photo Filter Powder Foundation and the combination is out of this world.

It is pretty pricey at R395 for a 30ml from Redsquare, but I think it is definitely worth it!

Although it has taken a little while to see slight results, i am loving this cream. It is so easy to apply, my skin just soaks it up, and im left with a lovely smooth glow on my foundation-ready face. It is a lovely moisturiser, and the fact that its oil free ensures its not too much but just right for skin that, with the wrong moisturiser, becomes an oil factory. Im continuing to use this cream in anticipation to see even better continued results! :)

Prime Suspect #1

I was really excited and nervous when I got the news that I had been picked as one of the reliable eye witnesses of an on-going major crime investigation by BB. It was serious business when they called me to view the line-up of the suspects they had rounded up and now in custody. It was the most daunting task ever, but someone had to do it. When all the suspects lined-up, it was the most impressive line-up ever. First in line was Photo Finish The Original with all its variants, followed by Dark Spot Correcting; Hydrating; Luminising and Colour Correcting in Blend, Adjust & Balance in that order. To the far right was Pore Minimising; Blemish Control & Age Defying. It was nerve wrecking, because THEY all looked good for it! I had to take my time because BB was relying on me to deliver the smoking gun. So I closed my eyes and my mind raced to the scene of the crime. Yes, it was truly a horrific sight. Flawless foundation on application, a disappearing act by lunch time. Foundation seeping into the grooves of the skin resulting in a cakey, oily mess which looked like a glazed dry patchy wasteland. I was looking for the perfect canvas thus The Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer Oil-Free emerged as my PRIME SUSPECT #1.

The account of an Eye Witness:

I was over the moon when my Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer Oil-Free arrived in the mail. I had been dying to try this primer as I had heard only great things about it. The primer came in a slim black and clear tube with a screw cap, which is not bulky. It had a protective seal on both the cap and nozzle. The primer is colourless and feels very light on the skin. It has a gel-like texture but it quickly absorbs into the skin leaving no residue. It does not have a noticeable scent. It blends easily into the skin providing a matte finish and all day shine control. It contains no Parabens.

I would apply my moisturiser and let it set for a few minutes and then apply my primer and let it set for a few minutes before applying my foundation. Care needs to be taken not to apply too much primer because a little goes a long way. This product did not break me out and it most definitely lived up to the expectations I had of it. It even out and smoothed my skin surface for my foundation, blurring out any fine lines, etc. It made my skin feel silky smooth and hydrated at the same time providing great oil control. It provided the perfect finish for my foundation and greatly increased the longevity of my makeup as continuously looked fresh throughout the day. The Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer Oil-Free really created the perfect canvas for my makeup application and frequent touch ups during the day are now a thing of the past.

Please note that this primer might separate and shaking the tube may be required to mix the gel and the water before use.

I now understand why builders prime the walls before painting. A high quality primer will help hide any small imperfections on walls. A good water-based primer is recommended on new drywall whilst an oil-based primer is recommended for walls that have heavy stains from water or smoke damage or panelling. This pretty much sounds like foundation primer selection criteria to me. The Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer Oil-Free has just done that for my face.

The price for this primer is a bit steep at R360. However, stores like Edgars do offer some great specials form time to time and this might be the best time to make purchases.

A Little nugget of truth:

According to Vogue UK 15 Oct 2013 online article, “ Primers do for your skin what lingerie does for your figure – they smooth, flatter, conceal and hold things in place, so that everything you put on top of them looks immediately better…. Priming is bridging the gap between skin care and makeup.”

I am a firm beleiver in creating the perfect canvas on which to create my make up look, so naturally a good primer is an essential in my make up bag and a part of my every day routine.

That being said, I suffer from oily skin, so the disaster or having my make up either a. Slide off my face, b. Become blotchy or c. Virtually dissapear on my face half way through the day is a very sad reality in my world. This is why I am on a continous search for a multi tasking primer that will ensure my make up will stay looking as if I have just applied, for the duration of the day, and can take me from day to night with minimal to no touch ups required.

Sounds like im dreaming right? Well, i thought as much until I tried Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer in Light, and this is my journey...

Beauty Bulletin has very generously sent me this amazing Primer to review, little did I know at the time that my whole outlook on primer would do a complete 360!

Before using my lovely Smashbox primer, my current primer was giving me touch up free wear of about 5 hours max! And I seriously thought this would be as good as it got! I invest quite a bit of money in my make up so to have maximum wear out of it would be a dream!

About Smashbox Photo Finish Primer: Due to my oily skin problem, I selected to review the Light primer. I decided not to do any research on this before hand as I wanted to form my own unbiased opinion.

The packaging:

A sleek flat tube with the typical no nonsense approach of Smashbox - simplistic and attractive. The squeeze tube is super functional and non messy, allowing perfect dispension of a pea size amount (which is all you need).

The texture:

The formula is white in colour and has a cream gel like texture. It is not sticky at all, applies to my skin effortlessly, absorbs quickly, and leaves my skin feeling extremely hydrated and smooth, and best of all, it doesnt feel as if I am even wearing any primer!

How it reacts to make up application?

After applying Smashbox Primer, my foundation glides on so smoothly and evenly, leaving behind a flawless matte look.

How it performed:

- it gave me a maximum oil free wear of 12 amazing hours! And by this I mean, my make up stayed looking fresh and vibrant, and my oil was kept under tight control (Thanx be to Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer, I am now inlove with you)

- During these 12 wonderful hours, no touch ups were needed, NONE what so ever!

- I do an hour intensive workout straight after work every night and sweat bucket loads, so here is the shocker, my foundation, my blush and even my eyebrow pencil stayed in place, looked fresh, coulours were vibrant and unsmudged AFTER all the sweating. Yes, I am speechless as this was totally unexpected and a seriously pleasant surprize!

My 3 current opened primers have been pushed to the back of my cupboard and my Smashbox primer has taken front and center! I would definitely recommend this to everyone looking for a miracle primer, hell, i'll even shout it from the roof tops!!!

Some might feel that R395 is a bit steep, but i PROMISE you, its worth every cent! It is literally insurance for your make up, even for your eyeahadow - i dont usually wear eyeshadow as i suffer from, you guessed it, oily lids, but this primer literally eliminated that problem and I get beautiful nude shadowed eyelids through out the day with no touch ups needed.

I can't live without my SmashBox oil free photo finish foundation primer!

It had no oil, which is great for someone like me who suffers from bad acne, and did not aggravate my acne any way!
It really smooths out skin, and gives the appearance of less lines and wrinkles,
When I apply it, I can even explain how good it feels, all off a sudden my face feels super soft and silky smooth,
I prefer to apply with my fingers, and a pea size amount is enough to cover my entire face and a little of my neck, so the product lasts a good long time!

I so much like the way it makes my skin feel, I use it everyday, even the days I don't wear foundation!!

To use, apply your chosen skincare moisturizer, and wait till it is absorbed, then apply the primer, smoothing it gently all over the face, give it a few seconds to settle in, and then you can apply your foundation to your perfected and smooth face if you wish, or if you don't want the foundation, you're good to go!!!

This is product no women will ever regret getting

I used to use a different primer from Woolworths which was great but then I was given the Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer as a gift and I don't think I will ever turn back again!

I suffer from oily skin and this primer is an oil-free formula to smooth and perfect oily, acne-prone or sensitive skin. Yipeeee for me :)

It is a light, silky soft product that evens out my skin tone making the application of my foundation literally flawless.

You know a product is working for you when you get compliments from other people saying "Wow, your skin looks FABULOUS, what are you using"

This primer has a blend of vitamins A and E, grape seed extract and green tea with no particular smell to it but I think it's all in the touch and feel of your skin. This unique formula helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and pores for visibly softer skin with a velvety smooth finish.

I don't think I will ever be able to not use this particular primer before applying foundation again. It's a girls best friend!

This is a wonderful product. My skin felt velvet smooth after applying the primer. It was easier to apply foundation once this was on my skin. Best part is that it made me feel great.

A wonderful product to use, but not for the reasons they advertise. As a primer I expect it to smooth out my skin more than it actually did but the texture of your skin once you have used this product is phenomenal. Even my non-observant boyfriend was "wow"ed by how silky soft my skin is. The velvety texture does make applying foundation easier but certain foundations do not mix very well with this primer and end up with a slightly curdled effect, I also found that my coverage didn't last as long.
That said I would still absolutely recommend this product to anyone out there, the silky smooth effect while rather Cinderella-ish in it's ability to last certainly made me feel and look more amazing.

This product is a good quality primer at an affordable price and does a good job of smoothing the skin in preparation for makeup.

Quite a good one. It has nice consistency. Really helps to keep liquid foundation on. And even though it didn't give me perfectly smooth skin as I expected, it is still worth it.

This really does help my foundation so on silky smooth and easy and i use much less foundation and it keeps my foundation looking beautiful all day and night long.. I preffer the LIGHT foundation primer for my sensitive skin the regular one is way to oily, my foundation slips right off.
