Winter time not only brings the cold but also those pesky ‘chicken skin’ bumps on my arms known as Keratosis Pilaris. Its pretty harmless but very annoying , I like my skin to look smooth and flawless even when its covered with layers of clothing.
It can also appear on the thighs and butt but most comom on the back of arms. Unfortunately I get plagued with them if I do not treat it with a good moisturizer and constant exfoliation.
Here is a list of some of the products that I’ve tried and that are recommended for keratosis pilaris, for exfoliation I mix up my own sugar and oil scrub:-
Neostrata Lotion Plus 15% AHA
What they say 15% Glycolic Acid corrects the signs of photoaging
Brightens and evens skin tone
Improves skin texture
Ideal for experienced AHA users
What I say This should only be used if your skin is accustomed to AHA because 15% is very strong. Its also quite expensive I think I paid around R350 for a bottle I applied it twice a day like the directions says so it goes quickly, I saw visible improvement after a month of use but I stopped because this product is too expensive.
Environ Derma-Lac Lotion
What they say Environ’s Alpha Hydroxy Derma-Lac Lotion contains a medium concentration of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) for use on rough, sun damaged and congested skin.
What I Say This goes for about R190 which is the only pro it has against the Neostrata lotion. Otherwise I found this extremely sticky and uncomfortable on the skin. It they can resolve the stickiness I would try it again.
Eucerin Repair Lotion 10% Urea with Lactate
What they say Actively supports exfoliation of scaly skin and relieves itching. Intensively replenishes the natural moisturisers Urea & Lactate. The skin feels smooth and supple.
What I say This lotion has a very odd texture which makes it hard to rub in. If you don’t rub it hard it leaves a white film on the skin until it absorbs completely. It does make the skin soft and smooth but the creme version is apparently much better for KP but not available in South Africa.
Organic Coconut Oil
What they say Coconut oil is a safe solution for preventing dryness and flaking of skin it also helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema.
What I say Ol’ trusty coconut oil does help to smooth the skin and keep bumps at bay especially when its followed after a good exfoliation scrub while still in the shower. It soaks in and leave the skin glowing I found that coconut oil works best to keep skin smooth in Spring/Summer but not enough for harsh Winters so best to follow with an extra moisturizer.
