Perfect SockBun – Hairstyles

If you are searching for the mother of all updo’s, the one that incites hair envy in others and is oh-so très chic, you are looking for the sock bun hairstyle! I love throwing my hair up into a messy bun for a casual day out or a sleek, polished bun for a smart event. You don’t necessarily need long locks to be able to rock the sock bun ladies, short-medium length hair will work just as well!

Tools
As literal as the name is, you do actually need a sock, preferably a clean sock which matches your hair colour. To create this updo you will be transforming a mere sock into a bun ring! To create your bun ring you will first need to cut the toe area of the sock off, you will then be left with a long tube piece of sock. Now, roll up the sock so that it resembles a thick scrunchie or band. If you have shorter hair try using a sock made from thinner material or if you have thin hair and want to create a voluminous bun then use a thick sock and if your hair is long with normal thickness then either type of sock should work.

Methods
1)    The original method works best on those who have long hair. Tie your hair up into a high ponytail (you can tie your hair lower down if you want your bun to be lower). Pull your hair through the bun ring and hold the bun ring about two-thirds of the way up your ponytail, spread the other one-third of your hair around the bun ring and start tucking the end pieces underneath the bun ring. Start rolling the bun ring down your ponytail towards your scalp; ensure fly-away pieces of hair are tucked underneath the bun ring as you roll. Your hair will immediately form the classic bun shape as you continue rolling down the ponytail and continue tucking the fly-away pieces hair underneath the bun ring. Once you have reached the base of your ponytail secure the bun in place with a few bobby pins.

2)    The short hair method is my favourite as it always ensures a sleek bun despite the length of your hair. Tie your hair up into a high ponytail (lower if you prefer) and place the bun ring at the base of your ponytail. Spread your hair all over the bun ring, so that the bun ring is completely covered (leaning forward or bending over while doing this will make this step easier). Once your hair is completely covering the bun ring, take a second hair tie and place it over the bun ring and make it sit at the base of your first ponytail. You have now created an instant bun as the hair has been pulled over and secured in a bun shape over the bun ring. Twist and wrap any loose ends of hair around the base of the bun and secure in place with bobby pins.

3)    The wrapping method is one of the quickest methods, this is where you tie your hair up into a high ponytail (lower if you prefer) and place the bun ring at the base of your ponytail, then simply wrap all your hair around the bun ring to create a bun shape. You may need to wrap your hair a few times around the bun ring depending on the length of it and ensure that you hide the bun ring when wrapping your hair. Secure the bun in place with a few bobby pins.

4)    The unrolled bun ring method may help those who have layers or shorter hair. You need to unroll your bun ring if you have already rolled it, basically you just need the plain old sock here! Tie your hair up into a high ponytail (lower if you prefer) and place the sock over your ponytail so that the sock covers all your hair…you won’t see your hair in your ponytail at all…you will just see the sock.  Hold the ends of your hair through the sock and start rolling the sock down your ponytail towards the base of your ponytail (original method). While doing this ensure you spread your hair out as you roll down to create the bun shape and to hide the sock. Secure the bun in place with a few bobby pins.

5)    The looped method is where you tie your hair up into a high ponytail (lower if you prefer) and place the bun ring at the base of your ponytail. Take a small section of hair from your ponytail and loop it around and through the bun ring. Continue looping that section of hair around and through the bun ring until all the hair has been looped around and through the bun ring, secure in place with a bobby pin. When you are sectioning your hair to loop around make sure you start looping at different places on the bun ring so that the entire bun ring starts getting evenly covered with your hair. Repeat this step, taking section by section of your hair and continue looping it around and through the bun ring and secure in place with a bobby pin. Once all your hair has been looped around and through the bun ring, secure any fly-away pieces of hair with bobby pins.

Hope you enjoy creating your sock bun hairstyles!
