Hairstylist Fiona Waddell on Fringe Benefits

Expert Opinion: Hairstylist Fiona Waddell On Fab Fringes

 {2jtoolbox simpleslideshow id:41}

I cut a fringe. Not just any old fringe, mind you. When I cut a fringe, I dedicated a whole phone album to snaps of celebrities and their fringes. Think Taylor’s sweeping side fringe; Zooey’s old-school bangs, and Jennifer Garner’s long sleek cut.

I marched to my hairdresser armed with all these references, only to be told that my ultimate fringe of choice – a thick Alexa Chung cut- was a very bad idea, and that I’d have to go back to the drawing board (or rather, Pinterest) for inspiration…

To save you from a similar fate, we’re talking fringes with one of Cape Town’s top hairstylists, Fiona Waddell, whose hair and makeup artistry has graced the pages of local and international glossies like Vogue, Elle, Sports Illustrated, Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire. She’s also styled top celebs on set for movies, mini series and music videos, and beautified brides at weddings around the world.

THE FRINGE vs. FACE-SHAPE DILEMMA

NT: As much as I’ve tried – and boy have I tried – I can’t figure out which fringe compliments my face shape.

FW: It’s not about the fringe style itself, or the face shape. It’s about determining the length of the fringe and how it frames the face. A fringe must always compliment the cheekbones and jaw line.

CURRENT FRINGE TRENDS

NT: I love this season’s mid-length cut or lob (long bob) with a messy fringe. Think I could pull it off?

FW: Definitely. A longer, heavier fringe that is slightly A-symmetrical is trending this winter season. It’s a versatile, low-commitment style that most people can pull off.

NT: Any celeb fringes you’re loving?

FW: I love Behati Prinsloo’s long fringe; Dakota Johnson’s shaggy, traditional fringe, and Katy Perry’s new crop with a full asymmetric fringe – it’s very Kris Jenner!

FRIGHTENING FRINGES

NT: Care to share any horror stories?

FW: A DIY fringe story is always entertaining, or when a child gets hold of scissors and decides to play hairdresser. I had one client’s child cut his hair down to the scalp! Needless to say, mom was not happy!
