Pioneer Estee Lauder launched her self-named cosmetics company in 1946. Estee Lauder started with only one product, a skin cream, adding more products until she offered complete skin care, perfume and makeup lines. The skin cream was developed by her uncle and Estee marketed it, gaining distribution in the exclusive Manhattan store, Saks Fifth Avenue. The Estee Lauder product line is sold in department stores worldwide. They also have their own retail stores. By the 1960s her brand had achieved name recognition throughout the United States.

Estee Lauder, born Josephine Esther Mentzer, died in 2004. Today, the Estee Lauder Companies are run by descendents of Estee and Joseph Lauder and the family still holds a majority controlling interest. The Bumble and Bumble salon and hair care company and the online cosmetics retailer Gloss.com are also part of the Lauder empire.

Estee Lauder was a trend-setter in many ways. She started the cosmetics "gift with purchase" and was a strong believer that women would purchase products they had been allowed to sample. In addition, the firm employs a high percentage of women and many females are found within the executive ranks.
