Essence says "All those well-known nail polish problems are finally over: no more chipping or scratches. Instead, you can now look forward to long-lasting, shiny gel nails that can be removed by simply peeling them off! The new technology is based on an innovative “peel-off gel base” formula specially developed for essence, which hardens within seconds underneath the essence LED lamp. Sensational: this unique concept works with any essence colour & go nail polish, so there’s absolutely no limit to your choice of colour! And as always with essence, the gel nails at home products are available at an unbeatable, low price."

I was as excited as everyone to buy this kit, but each time the results are disappointing... It all goes wrong after the top coat. I follow the instructions precisely and cover the tip of the nail perfectly, only using Essence products. After curing the nails under the lamp, the top layer (and sometime the base layer) shrinks considerably leaving unaesthetic edges. Sometimes, small bits of the top layer even come off as I clean the residue with the damp cleanser pad. I've tried it over and over, I even bought another top coat (thinking that might be the issue) - the polka dots effect coat - but the same! It shrinks quite a bit. I'd upload pictures but I'm not sure how, as I am new here. I wish I could be as excited about it as most seem to be, but what am I doing wrong if anything? Or is this the best I can get of it? Other customers seem to get better results...

The Essence Gel Nails at Home set is amazing to have if you love gel nails. It is convenient to use at home and saves all the time it would take to go to a nail salon. The products that go with this kit also last quite long. I have had my kit for a year now and the bottles aren't even half yet.
I know not every one is great at doing their own nails, but this is really easy to use and the look of the gel nails look amazing.

Gel nails at home by Essence is easy to use. The process is easy - nail treatment, peel off coat, and you can use any nail polish (normal) over that with the gel top coat to end off with. All of the items needed can be bought at Dis-Chem - they do go quite quickly so phone and enquire before hand. You can buy the starter pack and UV light conveniently in store. The total pack is less than R600. What a steal! Although the peel off coat does shrink inward, it did not make the removal any harder. Easy to use, effective.

This was real value for money. I bought the LED lamp and the starter kit, it cost me R450 for those two and then I bought some added extras like the nail file an so on. If you're keen on doing your own nails then this great for you. I use it with all my nail colours, not just my essence ones. Though I find that this only last me maybe 5 days. I will do my nails on the Sunday evening and by Friday they're peeling and ready to come off. Also I find the peel off base completely ruins my nails so I do DIY soak off and that's a beaut. Personally, I'd rather deal with the little mishaps which I can find a solution to, than pay R250 a shot for salon nails.
