As a follow up to my article on makeup tricks to achieve ageless beauty, I thought I would focus a bit more on foundation this time. Foundation can really make or break a look, and let’s face it; there is nothing worse than a face full of cakey-looking base. This is especially yucky if you have mature skin and the base has settled into lines and wrinkles. So, how can we avoid the cakey look?
As your skin matures, it is best to opt for a liquid foundation with a satiny-type finish. Try to avoid foundation powders and sticks, as these formulas are more prone to settling into lines. While it is tempting to try and disguise age spots and wrinkles with creamy foundations that boast full coverage, this isn’t always the best option. Initially, these products make your skin look fab as they are highly pigmented and easily disguise age spot. However, as the day progresses, your skin will drink in all the moisture and you may still be left with a “plakked on” look. This has happened to me, and it is horrible to look in the mirror and see how that foundation, which looked smooth and flawless in the morning, now shows up every fine wrinkle and pore that you were trying to mask!
To avoid this foundation faux pas, look for a foundation containing light reflecting particles to give you a gorgeous glow, and that will help to disguise imperfections. We love Revlon’s PhotoReady Makeup. which is a dewy foundation that is formulated with photochromatic pigments that reflect and bend the light to disguise all your flaws. If you really feel like you need a foundation with extra coverage, always counteract dryness with a good moisturiser and a hydrating primer. Try Smashbox’s Photo Finish Hydrating Primer for an extra boost of moisture for your thirsty skin.
Application of your foundation is key! Try using a fan brush, which has been specially developed to diffuse the foundation, so that it won’t settle into fine lines and pores. Be especially careful when you apply makeup to the delicate eye area. Make use of a dampened sponge and gently tap your foundation into the thinner skin around your eyes. This will help prevent it from looking cakey and highlighting wrinkles and fine lines.
When selecting your foundation, look for products that contain anti-aging goodies like hyaluronic acid, peptides and Vitamin C. If you apply a good anti-aging foundation over your anti-aging serum and day cream, then you are giving your war on wrinkles an extra boost.
Try selecting a warmer shade of foundation. Look for a shade that is one shade deeper than your actual skin tone or you can even mix the foundation you are currently using with one that is one shade darker.
I hope that you have enjoyed this article! Please let me know if you have any anti-aging makeup tips. I would love to hear them xx.
