DIY Beach Curls – Hairstyles

Hi Ladies and welcome to My FIRST D.I.Y blog post for Beauty Bulletin, all about hair care. If you are anything like me and hate spending money on things that you can make then you will LOVE my posts. I know I sound “cheap” but I promise you I have NO problem spending money, however my idea of shopping is spending R250 and getting a whole outfit head to toe, and not just ONE dress. If that is cheap then so be it 😉 There is also some sort of satisfaction in finding a bargain or making something yourself, especially when you receive a compliment on it!

I have a natural wave in my hair, when I was younger my hair was really curly. As I got older it turned into more of a wave but it tends to “flop” easily. Believe me I have tried everything, from mousse and gel to sleeping with my hair in plates, coiling hair strands and bobby pinning it, literally everything.

My hair dresser introduced me to this Beach Curl spray by Lee Stafford, Toni & Guy have a similar one, but for over R100 a pop I just wasn’t prepared to buy it and not have it work. I looked at the ingredients and it seemed so simple to try out, I read a bit about a D.I.Y option online, but they had put alcohol in the mixture and 1) I didn’t have alcohol at home 2) didn’t want to damage my hair.
One day I was walking in Shoprite and saw Coconut Oil for R8 I was so excited, it is not something I have ever looked for so I was really happy to just “bump” into it. My grandpa told me he used to put it in his hair when he was young to condition it and I’m sure I would look cool and slick (pimpin’ haha) so this made me even more excited to try it out. I mean if even my wise grandpa used the stuff it has to be cool! I found the rest of the ingredients I needed at home:

Spray Bottle
1 Tea Spoon of Coconut Oil
1 Table Spoon of Salt
1 Tea Spoon of Gel
1 Cup of Warm Water (this helps with dissolving the salt)

The coconut oil I got was solidified so I had to melt it in a bowl of hot water; this was very quick to do. I then put all the ingredients into the spray bottle shook it, and let it settle. I used it the next day and was very impressed how fast it worked. I sprayed it on dry hair and my hair was curly and soft, unlike using mousse or gel. The next time I tried it on wet hair, the result was very much the same. It also lasted 2 days and after that the salt was making my scalp a bit itchy. My hair is shoulder length so it bounced up quite a bit. I can’t wait for my hair to grow, and then use it.
Hope you enjoyed my first D.I.Y blog on hairstyle beach curls.
