“I think your whole life shows in your face, and you should be proud of that.”

Apart from her obvious beauty in her younger years, Bacall’s approach to growing older was refreshingly honest. She wasn’t ashamed of her strong nose and chin and snubbed any urges from Hollywood execs to pluck her brows, straighten her teeth or have plastic surgery in her later years. In fact it was her unique features that made her stand out in the first place with director Howard Hawks, after spotting her on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar magazine, choosing Bacall for the movie ‘To Have or Have Not,’ because of her, “thick eyebrows and crooked teeth, and that’s the way they would stay.” 

A little known fact is that Lauren was a talented make-up artist herself and would often apply her make-up and do her own hair for movies. Bacall was a women’s woman who embraced life and everything that came with it. 

Her influence on today’s actresses, like Jessica Chastain, January Jones and Cara Delevigne is evident with their deep side parts, full brows and scarlet lips. 

While we may have lost the iconic beauty this week, her influence and style will live on.
