I adore the look of Matte nail polish and recently I saw in the Avon brochure that they were selling the Black as Night colour for R35 (Usual price R89). I don't wear incredibly dark nail colours and bought this purely out of curiosity.
The nail polish formula is very running and thin - not something that I am use to. It has almost an ink like quality to it. Once applied it dries incredibly quickly and hardens after about 2-3 minutes - one thing I REALLY love! I hate spending over an hour from start to finish waiting for nail polish to harden. But it also means that you need to work quickly once you start applying the colour to your nails.
You need two coats to get a deep, dark and consistent colour but one coat is alarmingly good. It's only when the light hits the nail at certain angles that you can see 1 coat isn't quite enough. One VERY important thing is to make sure that you have Nail polish correction pens or nail polish remover handy to clean up any mistakes as you go along. The black really soaks into your skin very quickly and it becomes a nightmare to get it off if left to dry. That also means you need a good base coat to protect your nails from becoming stained - but that can be said for all nail polish.
The nail polish lasts reasonably well, but you need to be quite careful with it - you can't do dishes or clean the house (which might be a nice excuse to skip house work for a while) :D
Because this is a Matte it means you cannot apply a top coat (because it'll become glossy and you'll lose the desired effect - but if you want to protect the tips, use french manicure sticker guides and then apply top coat to the tips of your nails. It will give you a great 2 toned effect while protecting your nails.
PS. The attached image is not of my nails. I got it off a google image search. My nails are too short to make black look good :)
