As much as you love that pretty pink lipstick you got on special at Clicks, or that mascara that’s been responsible for the dozens of compliments you’ve gotten over the past few months, every makeup item has its expiration date. Below is a guide on the shelf-life of some of your most important makeup items and how to tell if they should be tossed out:

Foundation and Concealer
Shelf life: If you’re using a water-based foundation, it can last up to 12 months. If you’re using an oil-based foundation, it can last up to 18 months. Concealer can last up to 12 months.
How to tell: If your concealer or foundation, whether it’s cream or liquid foundation, has separated into layers, the colour has changed or it starts to smell funny, it’s due time for a replacement.

Powder Foundation, Blush, Bronzer and Eye Shadow
Shelf life: Most powder products can last up to 2 years.
How to tell: When your powder product, whatever it may be,starts to get drier and flakier than before, a new one should be in order.

Mascara
Shelf life: Mascara expires the fastest; it can last up to 2-4 months.
How to tell: As soon as your mascara starts to clump or smell strange, it’s time to go.  

Lipstick and Lip Gloss
Shelf life: Lipstick can last up to 1-2 years. Lip gloss can last up to 1 year.
How to tell: If your lipstick has become dry or has a rancid smell, throw it out. If your lip gloss has become extra sticky and plain impossible to use, it’s spoiled.

Lip and Eye Pencils
Shelf life: Both lip and eye pencils can last up to 3 years.
How to tell: If it starts to crack and break off more than usual, this should be your sign to toss out.

It’s simple; if it looks bad or smells bad, it’s probably gone bad and will be bad for you. And, when in doubt, throw it out!
