The Brazilian Keratin Beauty Treatments

Get the best beauty treatments on the market. Find out how you can have a soft, sleek hairstyle for good!

I just cannot live without my Brazilian! No, not a gorgeous Brazilian dude with washboard abs or that hairdo you need to give your lady garden if you want to wear a skimpy string bikini! This is the Brazilian keratin beauty treatment that my hair salon charges an arm and a leg for, but it makes me feel like a princess, so is totally worth it.

So what is it? In a nutshell it is a solution of keratin and collagen that is coated onto the hair and then sealed in with a flat-iron. It eliminates frizz, fly aways and curls, so hair is left sleek and smooth like never before. The process is a long one (about 2 ½ hours), the chemicals are applied to your hair and then followed by lots of blow-drying and flat-ironing (which takes forever!). Luckily the product my salon uses can be washed off straight away and then hair can be dried as normal. I know there are a few products on the market which require 72 hours of no hair washing, I could NEVER wait that long.

The Brazilian Keratin  hair trreatment has received some bad press as regards its formaldehyde content, as formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. I have asked my stylist about this and he says the product they use has an extremely low formaldehyde content(well within safety range) and the only one really in danger is the stylist who may do up to three Brazilians in a day 6 days a week, so is exposed long-term. He wears gloves when he applies the product, so I am not wild about the idea that the product is going onto my scalp and it does sting my eyes a little (like the old perm solutions, but without the really bad smell). He also says that there is actually formaldehyde in most hairdressing products, even the keratin treatments that say “formaldehyde-free”, as they contain a component that converts to formaldehyde when heat is applied. My view is that I only have it done about twice a year and I don’t smoke so this is my little poison!

My hair is a very bad mix of straight and frizzy with kinks in all the wrong places when air-dried. I have to spend ages with a hairdresser and paddle brush or GHD it within an inch of its life to get any kind of good hair day happening. The Brazilian keratin treatment is life-changing! Since my first treatment my hair has never gone back to bad. I had ten months between my last treatment and the one I had done three weeks ago and it was only right towards the end that I even had to look at my GHD. The only styling my hair requires at the moment is three minutes with my hairdryer. I wait until my hair is almost air dry and then finger-dry with my hairdryer. My hair is smooth and sleek, no fly aways or frizz!

If you want to have the Brazilian keratin treatment done, check out your stylist first. Mine is excellent, but this treatment done the wrong way can damage your hair. If it is done correctly it can vastly improve the look of over dyed, dry, frizzy hair. It works well on dyed, streaked, permed and otherwise chemically damaged hair, in fact it will last longer on chemically treated hair than virgin hair, because the cuticle of the hair is then more receptive. In my experience have your hair trimmed after the treatment is done, as it does make split ends more noticeable as the hair is so smooth. I wouldn’t recommend this treatment if you like to have lots of volume, as it does reduce the volume of the hair. I personally prefer the smooth and sleek look, so it suits me to have the volume reduced.

The downside of this treatment is the price. I pay R1000 for my hair, which is actually cheap for long hair, but I have been with my stylist for a while. Some salons can charge up to R2000 for a single treatment. The other expense is the shampoo. You have to use a sulfate-free shampoo, but can use a store bought conditioner if you want to. I love Pureology’s range, but MorocconOil’s shampoo is awesome! I condition with Dove’s treatment conditioners.

I now have a good hair day every day thanks to my Brazilian beauty Treatment!
