According to Somalian born, Iman, wife of infamous rocker David Bowie and international supermodel and businesswoman extraordinaire, every woman has their own recognisible beauty! Her range Global Chic encompasses this motto, and caters for women of colour everywhere! We love her motto, and she futhers this belief by adding that it doesn’t matter if you are a size 6 or an xxl, you are beautiful and deserve to feel beautiful! We second that!
She says that her signature range was born out of years of frustration of watching professionals like Francois Nars or Kevyn Aucoin taking an hour to mix six foundation shades just to get her colour! So she developed her own range and is involved in every stage of its production from mixing colours, to testing it out on her own skin!
Here is an extract taken from the infamous, Beauty Bible by Sarah Stacey and Josephine Fairley.
• “Black skins are surprisingly vulnerable to sun damage! The problem is that you can’t see the damage- but it’s there. In summer, I’m two shades darker than in winter, and I burn easily. I believe that wearing an SPF15 daily on the face is a must!”
• “Alcohol-based toners destroy the skin, which redoubles its oil-producing efforts to make up for the oil you’re removing. You need really gentle cosmetics, because sensitivity is often a problem for woman of colour too!”
• “Use bronzing powder instead of blusher for a much more realistic effect.”
• “Take a cue for your lipstick from your skin tone. If you have light skin, you should wear light berries and neutrals; medium skin looks good in rich earth tones and dark skins suit deep tones.”
• “Don’t use base to take your complexion lighter or darker. Test foundation on your jaw-line, where the neck meets the face. The right colour will disappear completely in daylight. I like foundations that have powder built into the formulation, so that you don’t get a cakey-y effect – or powders that are tinted, used over moisturiser, so that you don’t even need foundation.”
Iman surely knows what she is talking about! Try and test her makeup tips for yourself and let us know what you think!
